Decorating and Holiday Safety
Safety is the most important thing when it comes to the holidays and decorating. Children get very excited about this time of year and accidents occur. There are many ways that you can practice safety when you are decorating your home this holiday season.
One of the best things that you can do is use artificial Christmas trees for this season rather than a real one. If you buy your tree right after Thanksgiving then you have an entire month for the tree to dry out and become a fire hazard. This can be a problem. You should never burn candles or things near the trees and make sure that it is completely fresh. A fake tree is the best solution because you don’t have to worry about not enough water or the tree being too dry.
When you are planning on having lighted palm trees out in the front yard you need to take extra care climbing up high. The important factor is that you could fall from the ladder and break a bone or something extremely serious could happen. Be careful when you decorate at high levels. Have someone spot you on the ladder and if you have to reach too far in one direction then it is best to climb down and move the ladder over then attempt the stretch. This is how people lose their balance because they think if they can just get one more nail in. Lighted palm trees won’t seem so important if you have a broken back during the holidays.
Another safety factor when you are decorating during the holidays is candles. Candles are usually everywhere. They are everyone’s favorite gift to give and they seem to put people in the mood for the holidays. Candles are the biggest reason for house fires during this time of year. Be sure there is a safety plate beneath candles in your house that are lit so they can catch the wax. Keep lit candles away from small children and out of their reach. It only takes a few seconds of a baby pulling a candle down on themselves or the floor igniting a fire.
When you decorate during the holidays it is best to keep a mind for safety. Scan your house and look over the decorations. Be sure you don’t have too many lights on the tree that could be a fire hazard. Keep in mind that you should never string more than three strings of lights together as decorations on the tree. That is not only silly but can be a potential fire hazard.
The holidays are most people’s favorite time of year because of the spirit of giving but also because of the decorations. When you decorate your house this year be sure you are very mindful about the safety factors so you can prevent a house fire. Fires break out more in homes during the holidays from candles and lights on the trees. Also, don’t climb up things without proper footing with a ladder and have someone to help you. Trying to do it all yourself might just get you hurt.
