Designing Your Home Office
Designing a home office is an enjoyable project. Here are a few things to consider when designing your home office to ensure you have everything you need and you don’t have to make big changes later. These things include having enough space, safety proofing, and having everything you need.
Enough space is a big factor when you are designing and setting up a home office. If you are limited on space or you just get to use the corner in a room as your office space, you need to ensure you have enough room to work comfortably. Without enough room to work comfortably, this will only ensure that you are not productive. The more comfort, the more productivity. Make sure your desk is big enough. Don’t pile things on your desk and cause your space to be crowded. Have file organizers, pen holders, and shelves. A desk with built in shelf space above gets the piles of paperwork off of the desk and brings is above you to organize it. This way you can type with your arms relaxed on the desk and you can work comfortably.
Safety proofing a room for an office is important if you have children or you are accident prone. Many people who don’t have children often run into the corner of their desk on a regular basis causing a bruise later. You might even have a continuous bruise on your leg because you always hit the corner. Things like edge protectors and cardboard edge protectors can eliminate cuts and bruises for children and you. You might have a chair with wheels and a carpet. It is best to get a plastic mat for your chair. It will be easier to move around in and you won’t tip over in the chair if you try to slide from one side of your office to another. This is most common with a shag carpet. Also, if you have items in your office like letter openers or things that can hurt a child, be sure to put them in a locking desk or in a location that is not reachable up high. The last thing you want is your baby to fall on a letter opener.
Having everything you need seems simple when you have a home office. However, there are many things you won’t think of. The most important things in an office include filing cabinets, a fan, a wired in high speed internet connection and a phone line. Having to run the cable yourself can be a real pain. Shelves are important. Most people don’t think about shelves. However, if you are limited on space, then using the walls for space and putting up some shelves will not only make the room look bigger but give you the space needed to maintain a clean office area. You can put your books on wall shelves and even pictures and other items that require custom packaging solutions you don’t want to break. Also, make sure you have enough power outlets and you use a good power supply.
