Designing Your Home Office

Designing a home office is an enjoyable project.  Here are a few things to consider when designing your home office to ensure you have everything you need and you don’t have to make big changes later.  These things include having enough space, safety proofing, and having everything you need.

Enough space is a big factor when you are designing and setting up a home office.  If you are limited on space or you just get to use the corner in a room as your office space, you need to ensure you have enough room to work comfortably.  Without enough room to work comfortably, this will only ensure that you are not productive.  The more comfort, the more productivity.  Make sure your desk is big enough.  Don’t pile things on your desk and cause your space to be crowded.  Have file organizers, pen holders, and shelves.  A desk with built in shelf space above gets the piles of paperwork off of the desk and brings is above you to organize it.  This way you can type with your arms relaxed on the desk and you can work comfortably.

Safety proofing a room for an office is important if you have children or you are accident prone.  Many people who don’t have children often run into the corner of their desk on a regular basis causing a bruise later.  You might even have a continuous bruise on your leg because you always hit the corner.  Things like edge protectors and cardboard edge protectors can eliminate cuts and bruises for children and you.  You might have a chair with wheels and a carpet.  It is best to get a plastic mat for your chair.  It will be easier to move around in and you won’t tip over in the chair if you try to slide from one side of your office to another.  This is most common with a shag carpet.  Also, if you have items in your office like letter openers or things that can hurt a child, be sure to put them in a locking desk or in a location that is not reachable up high.  The last thing you want is your baby to fall on a letter opener.

Having everything you need seems simple when you have a home office.  However, there are many things you won’t think of.  The most important things in an office include filing cabinets, a fan, a wired in high speed internet connection and a phone line.  Having to run the cable yourself can be a real pain.  Shelves are important.  Most people don’t think about shelves.  However, if you are limited on space, then using the walls for space and putting up some shelves will not only make the room look bigger but give you the space needed to maintain a clean office area.  You can put your books on wall shelves and even pictures and other items that require custom packaging solutions you don’t want to break. Also, make sure you have enough power outlets and you use a good power supply.

Decorating to Make Your Small Home Look Bigger

If you live in a small home there are a few things you can do to make the space look much bigger. These things include the type of lighting you use, shelving, doors, and more. You can make a little space go a long way when you make minor changes to your living space.

Small homes are better because they are more intimate and people actually socialize much better when they are closer together. The problem is that people accumulate things and this can be a problem if there is no place to put them. You might have collections of things in boxes stacked in the closet or tables cluttered with items. This only makes the place look even smaller than it really is. The best things you can do are put up shelving and take advantage of the space you have on the walls. Shelving will pull everything up off of the floor and you can organize it neatly on the walls. This will make the room look much bigger and give it a touch of style. You can even put candles on shelves too.

Lighting is another factor when you live in a small space. It is silly how much space a tall standing lamp really can take up. It might be in the way all of the time and you might find you are constantly tripping over the power cord to the lamp. The best lighting is track lighting when you live in a small house or apartment. Put the lights up on the walls or lined under your shelves. This can look very classy and luxurious if it is done right. This gives you more space on the floor. The more open your floor is the bigger the area looks.

If you have to live in a small place because you are working toward citizenship and getting your Green Card but you don’t have enough money to get into a bigger place you can make it look bigger. Doors make a really big difference. Closet doors and doors to other rooms actually close up a room and make it look much smaller than it really is. They can be in the way when opened and someone needs to get by and hard to maneuver around. The best thing you can do is add beads or even a drape. A nice stylish drape or a set of beads looks really neat and opens up the room also.

Small spaces can be decorated where you can have a lot of class and style and still make the space look much bigger. Many of the things you can do include add beads and drapes to replace annoying doors that are just in the way closing up a room, add shelving to the walls and get all of the clutter off of the tables and the floors, and add track lighting. Track lighting looks great, brightens up the room in a unique way, and takes the lamps off of the floor also.
